IRLAND 6c - 2013 Fuchs/Streicher

Our trip to Ireland
From April 24th to May 4th we went to Ireland with Prof. Fuchs and Prof. Streicher and saw many interesting sights. We spent the first five days travelling around in Ireland and then we stayed five days in Bray, Dublin  with host families. On the day we arrived, we were picked up by our bus from the airport and drove right to Clonmacnoise. It is an old  monastery and was very important in the early centuries of the medieval Ireland. We also saw a short film about the history of Clonmacnoise. Then we spent our first night in the Bellbridge Hotel, Spanish Point. On the second day, we went to the Cliffs of Moher. Although it was windy, we enjoyed the sight there and we took many photos. The high cliffs – 120m to 214m high - were really amazing. Then we went to see the Burren.

It is a beautiful karst-landscape right by the sea. After that, we went to Galway City where we saw a church and had a bit of free time. Next, we visited Poulnabrone Dolmen, a tomb, before we drove back to our hotel. The third day started with Bunratty Castle. It was a guided tour with free time at the end and the guide was very funny. Later, we walked around in the Bunratty Folk Park, where we could see some old houses. Then our bus brought us to the Killarney National Park, which is quite big. It started to rain and even to hail so we went to our new hotel in Killarney. On the next day, we first went to the beach and later to the Dingle peninsula. Finally, we visited the Dingle Ocean World, an aquarium. The next day began early, because we had to be at Blarney Castle at 10 a.m. There we saw the famous Blarney Stone. Then our bus  took us to the Rock of Cashel. In the evening, we arrived at the language school in Bray, where we were picked up by our host families. On the sixth day, we had our first lesson in the language school and then we had a little orientation tour in Bray, so we knew where some shops and the busses were. Then we took the bus to Dublin and visited the Guinness Storehouse. Unfortunately we didn’t get any Guinness there but at least we now know how it is made. On the next day we had a quick tour through Dublin and then went to Trinity College, where we saw a huge library of old books and the Book of Kells, an old  illuminated handwritten gospel book in Latin. The next day, we had no school and so we visited the Croke Park Stadium.

It is one of the largest stadiums in Europe and Gaelic Football and Hurling are the mainly played sports there. I think it was one of the most interesting things we saw in Dublin, because everybody liked it. In the afternoon, we visited Kilmainham Gaol and saw, how the prisoners had to live. We also heard about its history and its important role in the fight for the independence of Ireland. On the ninth day, went to Glendalough, a very beautiful place with lakes. We walked around there and it was really great, because it was  such a natural and green place.

On the last day of our journey, we went to see Dublinia and  Christ Church. Dublinia is a kind of museum but it is allowed to touch the things there and there were a lot of things to try out and to interact with. Then we had about 2 hours for ourselves and nearly everybody bought some souvenirs. That was our trip to Ireland and I think all of us enjoyed it.
